Covering a land area of 7,497 square kilometres and a population of approximately 388,000, the Tayside Police is the Territorial Police force of the Scottish counties of Angus, City of Dundee and Perth and Kinross.
The force was created during the local government reorganisation in 1975 by the amalgamation of the three unitary authorities of Angus, City of Dundee and Perth and Kinross. Along with this, the Tayside Police Force is subdivided into three divisions that serve as the respective council areas. The East division is in charge of Angus while the West Division covers Perth and Kinross and the Central Division is responsible for the City of Dundee.
Today, the force has 1,078 officers and 27 stations scattered all over the three divisions. According to the Tayside Police Force, their main purpose is to:
- Uphold the law fairly and firmly
- Protect life and property
- Preserve order
- Prevent crime and detect offenders
- Reassure the public through the provision of a high quality service that offers advice, assistance and protection to everyone in the community

This is where the specialist units come in handy as it addresses to special public needs and concerns. Some of these specialist units include Dog section for skilled canines with expert trainers, the search and rescue team in times of calamities and destructions, road policing, child protection, professional standards for ensuring that all the members of the force are doing their jobs honourably well and last but not the least, the special branch that acquire advanced skills and technologies for serious national security matters.
