Special constables are more commonly known as specials who offer their services to work alongside actual police officers to help make their local community a safer place. Those that volunteer to become specials are from all different types of backgrounds and hold down regular jobs as well. In a more broader sense the role of a special will require you to work with your local community and help make a difference by taking part in patrols and crime prevenation actitivites in specific regions which are often known to be problematic. You will often find yourself working along side regular police officers and assisting them in their duties and support and major incidents that occur.

An extensive training that is usually offered runs for over 23 days which can be either a part-time or full-time basis. If you prefer the first, then you have to take the course once a week and which is usually held during Sunday. On the other hand, if you prefer to go full-time, then you will just be attending the training for 23 days only.
This training is designed to assist you in honing your skills so that you will be able to carry out your duties efficiently and effectively, which should be consistent with the law too. The training covers a lot of topics but the main topics that will be discussed are the following:
- Powers of arrest
- How to write book reports
- How to prepare evidence for the court
- The OFFICER SAFETY TRAINING- which trains you self-defense
- How to deal with confrontational situation
As a special constable you are compelled to attend further trainings for your continual development. You will be attending training for over 18 months which will equip you with more knowledge about your job. Trainings are necessary to keep you updated with new procedures and processes.
Once you have already obtained the right training and practical experience, you are subject to promotion already as it means that the scope of your responsibility gets bigger.
