Established in 1974, South Yorkshire Police has been tasked with enforcing the rule of law within the South Yorkshire metropolitan county. The force polices an area of approximately 597 square miles with a resident population of 1.28 million, making its sector a densely-populated one. It is the thirteenth largest police force in England with strength of about 3,413 officers divided into four Basic Command Units and distributed among 25 police stations with headquarters in Sheffield. It also pointed out that, during the same period, there had been reductions in certain crimes as follows: house burglaries by 3%, criminal damage by 14%, vehicle crime by 11%, and robbery by 8% while victim satisfaction had increased.
