The Force is looking for an Officer to enable Cambridgeshire Constabulary to address the needs of different community members by providing Police employees with multilingual support where language barriers are faced.
Main Duties are:
- To provide an interpreting service, best to the post holders knowledge and abilities in order to enable English speaking police employees to communicate with non- English speakers effectively and efficiently. To provide a service as when it is required to support Policing, in accordance with a professional code of conduct.
- To develop good knowledge of specialised vocabulary (terminology) in both English and other relevant language related to Police procedures to provide a complete and professional service.
- To provide an exact translation including regional colloquialisms and slang expressions without hesitation. To interpret all sentences including even those words that are embarrassing to participants and to have an understanding of regional accents to enable
- a full and complete understanding between the Police and the public.
- To participate in translated materials screening scheme: proofreading and text correction to enable the Constabulary to produce high quality translated materials.
- To provide an interpreting service at short notice, often during unsocial hours and over the telephone, to enable a prompt and efficient service.
Qualifications/Requirements are:
- Good written and spoken English
- Advanced knowledge of another native/ additional language
- Experience of speaking native and additional languages fluently including regional colloquialisms and slang expressions
- Ability to provide precise accurate interpretation without omissions or additions
- Ability to be impartial and confidential in all cases
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- To develop good knowledge of specialised vocabulary (terminology) in both English and other language related to Police procedures
- To develop abilities to understand different accents of English language
- Ability to build up a professional vocabulary for Police procedures
- Ability to keep calm when under pressure or in a stressful situation
- Ability to travel across the county
- Ability to be on emergency call out
- Experience of using Microsoft Word and e-mails and internet
- Understanding of Police Procedures which might involve an interpreter
- Understanding of professional interpreter skills for consecutive interpreting
- Ability to provide telephone interpreting
- Ability to participate in translated materials screening scheme: proofreading and text correction to enable the Constabulary to produce high quality translated materials
- To provide sight transaltion when required
- To behave in a professional manner and adhere to a professional code of conduct
