The Force is looking for a trainer who will train horses of all types, breeds and temperament, including young, untrained and/or partly trained, for Mounted Police duties.
- To develop and document effective and suitable training and stable management plans for individual horses assigned to the Equine Training department during pre-purchase trials, remount or remedial training, with consideration for the operational demands of the unit.
- To introduce, train and assess new horses to sufficiently accept routine tasks associated with their care and welfare for all TMU Police staff and Officers to handle them. Including leading in hand, tacking up, lunging, use of the horse walker, paddock turnout, shoeing, trotting up, clipping, trimming, loading and unloading into a wagon.
- To check and advise on the safe and appropriate fitting of tack and equipment to all horses and maintain saddlery records.
- To train and school horses to accept and respond correctly to the riders aids whilst maintaining the horses confidence and understanding. To include mounting, dismounting, progressive and direct transitions through walk trot and canter, halt, rein back, turns on the forehand and haunches and relevant lateral work.
- To develop the horses correct ‘way of going’ to promote the longevity of their working life both physically and mentally, with emphasis on the following scales of training; relaxation, rhythm, suppleness, contact, impulsion, and straightness.
- To assess and make relevant recommendations with regard to the Mounted Officers and Police horses development. Advise the Officer and supervisor concerned and report findings to the TMU management as appropriate.
- To continue to maintain and develop personal standards of riding, teaching and equine knowledge.
- To deliver accurate and constructive feedback, both verbal and written, to officers after coaching sessions.
- To write reports and maintain accurate written and electronic records associated with all aspects of training horses and officers.
- To plan and organise daily and weekly schedules of training of horses and officers.
- To advise the TMU management of any aspects of equine care/training which has been subject to change including keeping up to date with area of responsibilities by reading of professional journal, magazines, and attend meetings / seminars as required.
- To develop the horses ability and confidence to work alone and in close proximity with another horse.
- To work as a team with all equine trainers to achieve shared goals and responsibilities, including writing timetables to utilise time and resources effectively.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- British Horse Society Assistant instructor.
- British Horse Society Stage 4 Riding and Care certificate or equivalent experience.
- British Horse Society Intermediate Instructor or above.
- ACPO Mounted Instructor’s Certificate or equivalent.
- NVQ Level II Assessor.
- Significant experience of working for an equestrian training centre.
- Experience of training adults in stable management and equitation theory.
- Experience of instructing adults of all ages and ability, to include beginner and novice riders.
- Knowledge of horses including welfare, safety, handling, feeding, general care and equipment.
- Knowledge of dealing with emergencies.
- Knowledge and ability in training horses and developing riders.
- Ability to monitor the performance of horses and riders equitation skills and to give verbal and written feedback on this performance.
- Administration and planning skills.
- Able to carry out duties including lifting, bending, stooping and climbing.
- Has achieved a good attendance record.
- Physically fit and supple, able to ride and improve all types of horse.
- Willing to undertake training in ACPO Mounted Instruction and other relevant courses including NVQ assessor training.
- Prepared to work abnormal hours when necessary.
