The Police Initial Recruitment Test Explained:
Organisations such as the Police service
maintain the belief that requiring
candidates to undertake recruitment tests it
will help them to recruit the right
people for the role, with the right mix of abilities and
personal qualities. In addition the
written tests, along with the other stages
of the recruitment process enable the
recruitment staff to sift out a large
proportion of the
applicants.
You
will be asked to sit the tests as part of
the National Police Selection Process at a
test centre. These are compulsory
requirement across all 43 uk police forces
no matter which one you have applied to. The Police
force you are looking to join will set a particular score
which you need to achieve in order to
proceed to the next level.
The assessment centre is a 5-hour
intensive examination of potential
candidates involving:
role-plays, one-on-one interviews and
various written exams (not to mention a
fitness test).
The Police Initial Recruitment Tests also
known as PIRT are a series
of tests used by the police
to assess police
candidates.
The PIRT assesses your:
- numerical reasoning skills
- logical reasoning skills
- speed vs. accuracy skills
- verbal abilities.
These tests measure your ability to write
clearly and accurately, as well as your
ability to make logical conclusions when
presented with written text. Further, the
PIRT measures your numerical reasoning
skills and your ability to scan and check
information quickly and accurately. The
role-play, written police tests and interview scenarios
contribute to 95% your overall
mark so it is essential you demonstrate what
is required at every stage.

Time
The Police numerical reasoning test
The numerical reasoning test
will last for 12 minutes and there are 25
questions in the test. These will be
multiple-choice based questions which will
measure your ability to solve number
problems accurately. You will be given the
option to chose from a total of five answers
and you must select the correct one.
Don't panic during the build up to your
Numerical Reasoning tests. Whilst some tests
are difficult, the answer is more often the
most obvious and the simplest one.
The Police verbal logical reasoning
test
The verbal logical reasoning
test will last for 25 minutes and there are
31 questions in the test. These will be
multiple-choice based questions which will
measure your ability to make logical sense
of a situation when you are given facts
about it.
In this test you will be
given description of a situation and extra
facts about it. You will then have 3 choices
about the conclusion that you can reach
about that particular situation and you must
chose the one you believe to be correct.
The conclusions are as follows: True, False
or Impossible to say based on the
information you have in front of you and you
must chose the one you think is correct.
The Police Written Test Exercises
Both of the written exercises will last for
20 minutes each. You will be briefed about
each exercise before you being the test. For
example a
typical exercise you maybe one that asked
you to describe how you would deal with a
situation that has arisen and to reach a
solution.
Written exercise 1 – in this
exercise you will have to write a solution
to an issue that has occurred at The
Westshire Centre (this is centre where your
assessment day will take place).
Written exercise 2 – in this
exercise you will have to write a proposal
about an incident that happened at The
Westshire Centre.
