Within the police force in the UK, the role of police Sergeant is the first supervisory rank. Sergeant is senior to the rank of Constable, and junior to Inspector and with each step up the ladder your responsibilities and salary are adjusted accordingly.

The rank, like that of police officer is mostly operational and means that Sergeants are still very much part of day to day policing and a visible presence on the streets.  Uniformed Sergeants often have the added responsibility of being in charge of a shift and as a result are required to direct and instruct other police officers.

The bigger police stations will usually have a separate Custody Sergeant who is responsible for authorising detention of arrested persons under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, along with effective running of the custody suite. Newly promoted Sergeants will typically start on an annual salary of £33,000, which can rise to £38,000 after 4 years service.

How You Will Be Assessed During The OSPRE Part 2 exam.

The assessors are full trained staff who will observe your actions throughout each role play scenario. It will be their responsibility to record and evaluate your behaviour relating to:

1. Whether or not you have demonstrated any of the behavioural items that are in line with the competencies being assessed.

2. How well you have demonstrated each competency in line with a rating scale that ranges from 1 to 5. A rating of 1 will indicate that the candidate has demonstrated a purposeful approach whilst a rating of 5 indicates a vague or non existent approach. Once you have completed all seven role plays the assessor will grade you from A through to D. A being the highest grade and D being the lowest.
