The Police Role Play

The Police Role Explained

What will happen during the interactive Role Plays?

Each of the four interactive exercises will be split into two five-minute parts. The first part will be the preparation phase, which lasts for five minutes. The second will be the activity phase, where you will meet the role actor.

There are a total of four role-play exercises, each role-play lasting five minutes, but with a five minute preparation phase before each one. In total you will spend 20 minutes undertaking various different role play scenarios.

During the role play, you the candidate, will play the role of a police officer in a fictional situation. A typical exercise may require them to meet an angry customer who feels that they have received a poor response when they have complained about, for example, abusive comments from someone else.

You do not need to know about the law or procedures relating to police work but you are being assessed about how you deal with the situation and meet the core competencies.

The Police Role Play: Preparation phase

During the 5 minute preparation phase you will be provided with the actual scenario either on a card or sheet of paper. You will be taken to a desk or separate room where you will have 5 minutes to prepare for the actual scenario.

You will be allowed to take notes during the preparation and then use them during the activity phase.  Once your 5 minutes is complete you will then be taken to the activity area and the assessment will begin. After five minutes you will be notified that you time is up and that you must now move to the activity room, taking any notes you have made with you.

The Police Role Play: Activity phase

In this part you will interact for five minutes with a role play actor, in your role as a customer-services officer. The actor will take the written information given to you beforehand into account during the exercise. The actor is not there to catch you and they respond to you the candidate using strict set of responses. These responses will have been practiced beforehand by the actor to ensure consistency and a real role play like scenario.

In this phase you are not allowed to write anything but you are allowed to use the information that you wrote down before entering into the room. As well as an actor there will be an assessor in the room who will be making notes of your actions, your responses and your interaction with the actor.

Who are the role play actors ?

The role actors are police officers, police trained staff or alternatively they can be members of society who have been highly trained. The actors will not been other candidates who have applied to join the police and you will not be asked to take the place of one.

Insider Knowledge To Help You Succeed

How are you graded during the police role play?

The Police Officer application process is predominantly based around what are known as 'core competencies' and the Role Play is exactly the same. It is imperative that you can demonstrate during the role play activities that have the ability to meet these important core competencies. If you do not demonstrate these core competencies during the role play then you are likely to fail.

KEY TIP: You will be assessed against respect and diversity during every exercise. A single grade D in the area of diversity means an automatic fail, irrespective of the overall mark scored

As mentioned previously, an assessor will take notes on each role play you undertake. Afterwards you will be awarded a grade from A to D based on your performance. The top performing candidates will be given A grades and the candidates who do not meet the requirements will be given a D grade which is a fail.

How To Match the Police Core Competencies

During the 5 minutes preparation phase you must do 3 things:

1. Read the Role Play scenario quickly and take notes where appropriate.

2. Read the Westshire Centre welcome pack and look for areas that are relevant to the scenario that you are going to be dealing with. For example, if someone wants to see you about a bullying situation, what does the Equality and Fairness policy state?

3. Once you have taken notes on the above then it is time to compose yourself and get ready to enter the Activity phase.

The Problem For Most Candidates

The majority of candidates who undertake the Role Play exercises do not prepare for this difficult stage of the selection process and they end up failing as a result. Many do not know how to prepare, while others just hope that they will fine on the day.

For some candidates this is the most difficult part of the entire selection process for the simple reason that they are not comfortable standing up and acting in a role play situation. They then get very nervous, and often start to panic which is the reflected in the answers and their actions during the role play.

The reality is that the strong candidates are those who have spent time preparing beforehand.

One of the most effective ways that you can prepare is by practicing a mock role play scenarios and it will provide you with so much confidence.

Before you go into each Role Play scenario you will be given 5 minutes in which to prepare. Most candidates just sit there and do nothing. The 5 minutes preparation phase is plenty of time for you to prepare - but only if know what to do!
