Officer Interview Explained
The
police interview is
a
20 minute long
structured interview, where you will be
expected to answer each question for up to
five minutes. The four main questions change
slightly each year, but always ask for
specific examples covering four of the seven
“skill” areas.
The Police interview board
will have a number of set questions to
choose from and whilst these are constantly
changing they will form part of the Police
Officer core competencies.
Here are 3 typical police interview questions
you could be asked:
- "Why do you want to become a police
officer?"
- "Why do you want to join your
particular force?"
- "What have you done to find out
about your force you want to join?
You will be allowed up to 5
minutes to answer each question so don’t be
afraid to use the time you have. You may find during the
interview that the interviewer asks you
probing questions. These are designed to help
you in giving your response so listen to
what he or she has to say.
Remember that the person
interviewing you will stop you if you go
over the five minutes.
As the person
interviewing you asks you the question,
they will also give you a copy of the
question to refer to. When responding
you must choose examples that you feel
comfortable discussing with the person
interviewing you. You do not need to know about
customer-services or the law or
procedures relating to police work.
Do not be afraid to ask for the question to
be repeated, even in you are mid way through
providing your answer. Sometimes it is
better to obtain clarification, re-focus and
get back to exactly what the question is
asking you to demonstrate.
The last thing you want to do is go off on a
tangent and talk for 5 minutes because you
feel like you have to. If you can answer the
question within 2 minutes then do this is
not a problem.

Preparing For The Police Interview
Prior to the interview take the time to read
through your application form to remind
yourself of your answers there as some
questions will likely be based around what
you have written.
It
is essential that you practice your
responses to the questions before you attend
the Police Officer Assessment Centre. You

Effective Communication. This basically
means that you must be able to
communicate effectively and structure your
responses in a logical, concise and relevant
manner.
Answering The
Police
Interview Questions
The interview questions will
be about how you have dealt with specific
situations in the past. These questions will

focus on relevant skills you have that are
transferable to the role of a police officer
like problem solving and dealing with people.
Know Your Examples
 You must know
exactly what happened in the situation you
are describing when you answer a question
because you will get probed on the answers
you give.
Many candidates have
been caught out by this as they have made up
responses to the questions. If you are then
asked a probing question and you cannot
answer it or the example you give does not
make sense, the recruitment team will easily
be able to spot this.
The best
approach is to be honest and draw on
situations that have happed to you. The
simple reason is that if you are asked a
specific question about what happened you
will be able to straight away provide an
answer in a confident manner.
The
Police Interview Scoring System
The responses that you
give to interview questions will be graded
on a scale from A to D, depending on how
well you were able to meet the core
competency. The award of an A grade is
given to those candidates that provide
the strongest answers. The other key
point to remember is that a D grade on
the core competency of race and
diversity is an automatic fail!

The best way
to significantly increase your chances of
success at the interview stage is to
practice your responses before your arrive.
The candidates that are successful are the
ones that are confident and confidence does
not come naturally it is obtained from
practice over a period of time.

Many
