The Police Application Form 2012 Explained

help with police application form

Obtaining and completing a successful application form is the first stage in the recruitment process and arguably the most difficult. You need to be able to separate yourself from all the other candidates who has also submitted an application form.

The job of a police officer is one of the top jobs that people want to become and the competition at this first stage is intense. Many candidates attempt to join the police but not all will make it through the police application form.

If you are looking to join the police force the you should first contact the Force that you a considering joining and ask for an application form. You will usually be sent an application recruitment pack with the form included.

It is also becoming more and more common that application forms and police recruitment packs can be downloaded from your police force's website when they are recruiting for that particular role. Some police forces have begun to introduce an online application form, where everything is filled out and submitted online.

The Police Application Form Sift

Once you have submitted an application, the next part of the process is what is referred to as an application sift. This is where the recruitment team sift through all the application forms and decide whether you will be invited to attend an assessment centre. If you application is successful you will be informed about the location of the assessment centre and when you will be required to attend.

This is why many regard the application form as the most difficult stage to pass as at this first stage your are up against the most number of competitors than at any other stage of the entire process.

You get one chance to make any impression on the police recruitment staff so you need to ensure that you submit a strong application and really stand out from all the other candidates. Failure at this stage can mean waiting for another 12 months before you can apply!

How The Recruitment Staff View Your Police Application

"The recruitment staff that will be assessing your application form will ONLY have five pages of your application formavailable to them and these pages will contain the answers you have given to the core competency questions.

Why? - This is a deliberate attempt to ensure that everyone is assessed fairly, without information about academic qualifications, work history, sickness, age, gender or ethnic origin playing any part in the assessment."

How You Will Be Scored In 2011

The grading for your police application form is based upon the average that all other candidates have achieved on that question. Many candidates wrongly believe that the grade you get is calculated on an individual basis. What this means is that around 15% will achieve the top and lower grades (A and D grades) and the remaining people will achieve the two middle grades (B and C).

A ‘D’ grade means that, when compared to other candidates, your score was within the bottom 15%, an A grade you are in the top 15%. This process is repeated for each question, and then the overall number of marks are added up to give an overall score.

To pass candidates have to achieve a ‘B’ grade in 3 out of the 4 competencies, or a ‘B’ grade in 2 out of the 4 competencies, and a ‘B’ grade overall. This allows a candidate to make up for a weak score in one or even two competencies, with a stronger score in other competencies.

Police Application Form Competency Questions

1. Matching the Core Competencies on the Police Application Form

The Application form includes a number of questions that are based around the Police Officer Core Competencies. The Police recruitment staff want to see that you can meet the requirements of the role you are applying for.

Your answers need to match the core competencies that are relevant to the role as closely as possible.

The first thing you must do is to find out and understand what the Police Officer core competencies are. They can be found on the website of the force you are applying to join. Once located you should try to create your answers around these, and at the same time making your answer unique.

2. Including Specific 'Keywords' in Your  Police Application Answers.

The questions that are contained within the Police Officer application form need to be responded to in a specific way. Many applicants fall down at this stage by not thinking about the question and they ultimately end up providing a poor response that doesn't match the Police Officer core competencies. It is essential that you take the time to think of a scenario that you have experienced recently that relates specifically to the question that is being asked.

Once you have decided on a relevant response then now is the time to detail your answer on the application form using appropriate language and also making every effort to ensure that you match the core competencies. The most effective way to match the core competencies is to utilise 'keywords' in your responses that are relevant to the job description.

The Problem For Most Candidates

The Police Officer Application Form is the initial stage of the Police Officer selection process.

Whether you are completing the form on-line or via the post you must ensure that you tick the right boxes and submit the right responses relevant to your own personal experience. You must also ensure that you do not make the simple yet vital mistakes especially at the first stage.

The amount of people that send back application forms written in red or blue ink when the form specifies the use of black ink is amazing!

The reason why the majority of candidates never make it past the first stage of the recruitment process is due to the fact that they fail to demonstrate they possess the core competencies when answering the competency based questions. This is critical and one of the main areas on the application form that the recruitment staff assess.

It is a well known fact that over 75% of Police Officer application forms submitted do not make it past this difficult stage! That means that only 25% of all people who submit an application form even make it through to the assessment centre.
