The Policing Pledge

In all truth, there is only one reason why the police force in any area exists and that is to serve the public. Not only is the police force entirely funded by the taxpayers pocket but police officers are all civilians themselves and they must play an active role in the community. A recent government initiative has, to this effect, been realised by many police forces which have employed the police pledge.

The police pledge is an optional pledge that most of the UK police forces have adopted which sets out how the area's police aims to deliver its service to the public. In its pledge it sets out its main goals and targets and the method with which it is going to ensure public safely and confidence in the police service.

With an ever increasing public awareness on issues such as antisocial behaviour, many of these pledges contain a section on working with the local community, often with the recent employment of Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). For many pledges this forms the very first point in the police pledge and many forces are now using the pledge as an opportunity to extend a hand to the public and to reassure the public of a strong police presence.

Neighbourhood policing strategies are fast becoming the hot topic and a need for a strong and undeterred force on our streets has been the main focus of the majority of forces opting for the police pledge. In this way they can appear to be listening to the views and innermost concerns of the public and to show a greater level of care.

The pledge is also a very good opportunity for a police force to show which crimes it is planning on tackling and how it plans to go about it. This has the effect of showing a very high level of understanding on the part of the police forces and puts them in touch with the local community and the crimes that they are facing the most often.

As well as endearing themselves to the public, the police pledge allows forces to portray an exceptional degree of competence and commitment. In doing so it allows the government to see what is affecting the public, how the police forces are dealing with it and the steps that can be taken to improve things even further.

The police pledge is an important part of the way the police force interacts with the public. Without the pledge, many people would be very much unable to understand what the police force can do for them and would feel completely in the dark about what they can expect from their local policing department. This has been adopted by many police forces and can be easily viewed either at the local police station, on a distribution leaflet, if applicable; but most certainly on the force's website. It is completely accessible and completely up to date and easy to interpret. A very modern concept for a very modern police force.
