The PCSO Role Play Explained

During the PCSO selection centre you will be required to undertake 2 role-play exercises.

The PREPARATION PHRASE ( 5 minutes):

You will be given 5 minutes preparation time before you go into each Role Play scenario. You need to make the most of this time and 5 minutes should be plenty of time to enable you to prepare effectively.

The ACTIVITY PHASE (5 minutes)

The next stage is known as the activity stage where you will be called in once your 5 minutes preparation is up. When you walk into the room there will be a role-play actor and also at least one (sometimes two) role-play assessor. You will then begin your role play.

1. Practice Beforehand:

The majority of candidates who attend the Police Community Support Officer Role Play do not prepare for this difficult stage of the selection process and they end up failing as a result.

Preparation is vital at this stage and you need to make sure that you have practiced and are confident with Role plays before you attend the assessment centre.

2. Meeting The Core Competencies:

The PCSO recruitment process is mainly focused on the core competencies and your ability to match these and the Role Play is no exception to this. It is important that during your 2 role plays that you show the recruitment team you can meet these.

Failure to meet these could result in you being unsuccessful during this part of the assessment!

3. Using You Preparation Time Effectively:

During the 5 minutes preparation phase you can do to increase you chances of success:

- The first is to read the Role Play scenario that is in front of you and take notes.

- Read the Westshire Centre welcome pack and look for areas that are relevant to the scenario.

(An example of this would be if the role play is based on a bullying situation, then you should know what the Equality and Fairness policy states with regards to this matter?)

- Once you have taken notes on the above then it is time to compose yourself and get ready to enter the Activity phase.
