Norfolk Constabulary is the police force responsible for keeping peace and order in the county of Norfolk in England. It was founded in 1839 under the County Police Act of the same year, and was one of the first ever county forces to be formed. In 1965, it had more than 600 officers and volunteers. In 1968 it merged with the Norwich City Police and Great Yarmouth Borough Police to form the Norfolk Joint Constabulary, which was renamed to Norfolk Constabulary in 1974. Their headquarters is currently located at Wymondham, England.
On March of 2006, the Home Secretary submitted proposals for the constabulary to merge with neighbouring forces Cambridge Constabulary and Suffolk Constabulary so as to form a strategic and stronger police force for East Anglia. The Norfolk Police Authority was supportive of the merger but the neighbouring forces were not so enthusiastic about it, thus, the merger did not push through.
The Norfolk police force aims to reduce crime rate in their area of responsibility, and to ensure peace and order in the best way that they can. They provide numerous services to the public in order to achieve this goal. The services they provide include Firearms, Wildlife protection, Information for suppliers, Architectural liaison, Speed awareness courses, Community Accreditation Scheme, Fingerprint requests, Data Protection, Security products, and Home watch. These are the different kinds of service that they have formulated to be able to give high quality police service to the people.
At Norfolk, it is their aim to respond to calls for assistance in a swift and timely manner. Their officers are well trained and seasoned to address both emergency and non emergency calls and to act in a way that would protect and preserve the welfare of the people they serve. The Norfolk Constabulary has made excellent public service their main goal, as reflected in their motto: “Our priority is you.”
