Some say the world is a small place; others, like myself, think it remains a huge place. Whatever your stance on this, you will have almost undoubtedly used some form of transport before. The police need to keep this aspect of our lives safe, especially when our roads are the veins that keep our communities on the map. Traffic law enforcement devices form a large part of this duty and without them, the police would have an impossible task on their hands.
The police force can employ a large number of traffic law enforcement devices to help keep our roads and other means of transport safe. A car could be considered a speeding bullet and a huge danger if used inappropriately. A car can easily take the life of an innocent person if driven badly and the system of traffic laws are in place to give police the power to prevent this. There are also many clever little tricks they have up their sleeves.
The first thing the police have up their sleeves is the car they patrol in. These are incredibly well equipped, not only with a radio and lights. There are so many parts of a police car that no conventional car has. One of these could be the many sensors and number plate recognition technologies that a traffic police car has on board. These not so optional extras make the police car a mobile crime stopping machine. The cars can move too and the police own a handful of high performance, usually four wheel drive, cars to catch those speeding criminals.
As well as thieves and getaway drivers, the police sometimes have some more down to earth crimes to deal with. Drink driving is one of the most dangerous crimes if it goes wrong. Having insufficient control over a vehicle can lead to the death of the driver and members of the public. To ensure a driver isn't over the limit the police can use a breath analyser, sometimes referred to as a breathalyser. This device can measure the amount of alcohol in the breath of a suspect and then indicate if they have strayed over the legal limit. This enables police officers to determine if a driver has consumed too much alcohol – a little more accurate than the walking in a straight line test.
There are many other tools that the police can use to keep her Majesty's highways safe. Speed cameras are dotted across the country and so are bus lane cameras etc. These are generally viewed as ineffective, however, and are just an extra cash earner for most forces. In some cases there is a stinger trap to puncture a car's tyres to bring it to a stop. Technology in this area is rapidly advancing and new ways of stopping cars safely are being developed.
Traffic law enforcement devices are a really useful resource for the police as cars can be dangerous. These innocent looking devices can actually save lives and keep pedestrians safe. Traffic police have an array of technology to make even James Bond utterly proud, and that's impressive.
